Short Film Pick of the Day! Breath by Toby Meakins

A short film, to me, does it’s job by leaving you hungry for just a little more. Due to the nature of a short film (any film 40 min or less), we dont get a full back story to our characters and often times we as viewers as dropped in a specific moment in the characters life. We get to see things unfold just as the characters do, essentially we get a slice of their life. That is exactly what a short film is, a slice of Life. We don’t always need those elaborate back stories to get into the film, or to understand the characters.

Un Enemigo Disconsiderado (A Thoughtless Enemy) || A WiseMind Original Short

This short film was shot about 2-3 years ago. It did not have a script or any real planning to it other than just pick up a camera and make a short. With limited resources and the ambition to make something, we came up with this. There are several reasons as to why we didn’t initially want to put this out there to be scrutinized and criticized to death (due to the poor lighting audio, and pretty much this being the 1st actual short film that WiseMind Films attempted), but then we recently found the footage in an old hard drive and decided to play around with it. It’s always good to revisit your work and compare to see how far you have come. It obviously isn’t going to win any awards or go viral but it’s a completed project that actually has potential to be expanded on. For those are following WiseMind Films you will eventually see with our future projects that they are all connected one way or another. Some of the hints and clues wont be so easy to pick up on but those who have a good eye will notice these little things.

Short Film Pick! PROXiMITY by Triune Films

@RyanConnolly and his @Filmriot crew know how to turn a horrible situation into something great! They first set out to make a Zombie short called Outsiders with a $100,000 budget and was planning on taking us, the viewers, for the ride as they go through pre-production all the way down to post-production and ultimately show us the final product. As a Film Riot Junkie I was just as excited to watch these guys go through all the nooks and crannies involving the film making process, as they were to make the film. They actually got a few episodes in, showing us what they looked for when scouting for locations, how to story board the project, how to handle the script and was basically breaking down the project as they went along. The Film Riot community was loving it every step of the way. Like many others, I began watching their previous shorts, Losses as well as Tell a few hundred times, in preparation for Outsiders. Unfortunately due to things that were out of their hands, they had to postpone filming Outsiders. Left with a crew without a project and some fancy camera equipment, they did the only logical thing a true guerrilla filmmaker can do; whip up a new script and start filming! Continue reading
